How to Install Ubuntu

Step 1
Download the operating system from the Net. It is free. You can also ask for a free CD so you can restore it.
Step 2
After downloading the file, click “Install”. Press “Enter” and select a language. Choose the keyboard layout and the location.
Step 3
Type the host name (computer name). Choose which drive to install Ubuntu. Press “Enter”.
Step 4
Choose “Guided.”. If you have Windows and want to keep it, choose another partition. Select the entre disk if you want Windows removed.
Step 5
Enter the appropriate information in the form.
Step 6
Restart the computer and if you have Ubuntu and Windows, choose which to boot. If Ubuntu is the only OS installed, the computer will reboot automatically.
How to Install Applications in Linux Operating Systems
The process will vary depending on the Linux distribution. For Ubuntu, follow these steps.
Step 1
Start the computer and go to System Menu > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Type your password when prompted.
Step 2
Type the name of the program you want to install in the search field. Click “Search”. Go over the search results. Click the box on the left of the program you want to install. After the menu appears, click “Mark for Installation.” Click “Mark” if a message pops up saying other files are needed for the installation.
Step 3
Click “Apply” on the menu. When the summary appears, click “Apply”. Choose “Close” if the changes applied dialog box pops up.
For Fedora, use the following method.
Step 1
Turn on the computer and go to Applications > Add/Remove Software. Depending on the distribution system, you may need to log on at the root to perform an installation.
Step 2
Select from the software category from the window’s left hand side.
Step 3
Choose from the programs listed at the right hand pane. Put a check on the program you want to install. Choose “Apply Changes.”
Step 4
When the “Apply the Following Changes” dialog box pops up, click “Apply”. Enter the username and password if required.
How to Use the Command Line for Installation
If you want to use the command line, open a terminal window. If the system is RPM based, the yum command must be used. The apt-get command is to be used for Apt based Linux systems. The command syntax will vary per system. Refer to the documentation that came with your OS.
